A Community Safety Reminder for Harris County MUD 504
Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at 2:00 a.m. Remember to set your clocks back one hour. With sunset arriving an hour earlier by the clock, children may still be walking, biking, or playing outside as daylight fades. It’s a good time for everyone in the District to take extra precautions on our streets.
Drivers: Slow Down and Look Around
Be ready for children. Use extra caution near schools, parks, playgrounds, bus stops, and neighborhood crossings—especially at dusk and after dark.
Keep your attention on the road. Put your phone away and scan sidewalks, intersections, and the spaces between parked cars.
Check before turning or backing up. Look carefully for children crossing driveways or walking behind your vehicle.
Give pedestrians time and space. Yield at crosswalks and never pass a vehicle stopped for someone crossing the street.
Families: Plan for Earlier Darkness
Help children be seen. Add reflective details to jackets and backpacks and carry a flashlight when walking after dark.
Review safe routes. Use sidewalks and cross at intersections or crosswalks. Remind children to look both ways and wait for vehicles to stop before crossing the street.
Walk together. Accompany younger children and review after-school pickup plans as daylight changes.
Stay alert. Remind children to put devices away when crossing and watch for vehicles entering or leaving driveways.
Set your clocks back, not your attention. Slow down, stay alert, and help keep our children safe.
